Pacific: Ducks well-represented for All-Star Game
8 hours ago - nhl.com
When the NHL All-Star Game faces off in Montreal on Jan. 25, half of the Western Conference starting lineup will be Anaheim Ducks . It's the first time in team history the Ducks have had three players elected to the starting lineup, and only the second time since the NHL came to Southern California in 1967. "That's one of the things that shows the passion your fans do have in your market," coach Randy Carlyle said of having three Ducks in the starting six. READ MORE Niedermayer, now a five-time All-Star, collected 637,316 votes and Giguere, a Montreal native who may have gotten some help from his home city, got the first All-Star starting gig in his 11-year career with 617,241 votes. But the Coyotes seem to be getting the hang of winning at home this season. 13 was a 5-4 triumph against the New York Islanders last Friday.

Kings, Ducks midseason reports
18 hours ago - dailynews.com
Web Search powered by table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="100%"> RECORD: 16-16-6 (13th in Western Conference). MOST GOALS: Alexander Frolov (16). MOST POINTS: Anze Kopitar (29). 2 overall pick in the draft, and has exceeded them with brilliant defensive play. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: Anze Kopitar leads the Kings in points and has improved of late, but he's not the dynamic player of the past two seasons. The forwards have bought into coach Terry Murray's defense-first system, but the lack of offense has directly led to a handful of losses in winnable games. Grade: C The Kings have allowed the fewest shots on goal, on average, in the league this season, and they have done it without top defenseman Jack Johnson, who has missed all but two games with a shoulder injury.

Honda Center not kind to Bryzgalov this time
1 day ago - ducks.freedomblogging.com
Honda Center is usually a welcome place for Ilya Bryzgalov , no matter if hes wearing a Ducks jersey or Phoenix Coyotes sweater. That changed Sunday when Bryzgalov turned aside 32 of 34 shots for the Coyotes but fell victim to two power play goals that came on too-many-men on the ice penalties by Phoenix in a 2-0 loss. Were not playing our first game, Bryzgalov said of the penalties. Its very frustrating when you give up goals on a power play because of too many men on the ice. Bryzgalov was playing his first game after he sat out the previous two with an ailing back. He entered Sunday with a 4-1-1 record against the Ducks, with a 1-0-1 mark at Honda Center. The Ducks will see Bryzgalov plenty more because the teams have four more meetings this season.

Hiller is stellar for Ducks
1 day ago - nhl.com
He's not the one who will be starting for the Western Conference when the All-Star Game comes to Montreal later this month, but the Anaheim Ducks understand the value they have in backup goaltender Jonas Hiller . Chris Pronger and Bobby Ryan scored power-play goals and Hiller made them stand up by turning aside all 29 shots he faced as the Ducks earned a 2-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday at Honda Center. "Tonight was our best team effort that we've had," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. We got two power-play goals and they went (0-for-4) on their power play, so our penalty killers and our power play stood up." Hiller made a pair of glove saves during a 5-on-3 advantage for Phoenix in the first period to keep the game scoreless. Brian Hunter - NHL.com Staff Writer Despite Patrick Kane missing his first NHL game due to an injury, the Blackhawks rebounded from last week's losses to Detroit and beat the Flames for the third time this season, 5-2 at United Center on Sunday. ''That's tough for a goalie to get all the way back and across. Bryzgalov returned after missing the last two games with a sore back and made 32 saves.

Canadiens dominate East starters in NHL All-Star game; Penguins, Blackhawks, Ducks also shine NEW YORK - Only Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin prevented the Montreal Canadiens from an All-Star sweep. Crosby and Malkin, teammates and linemates with the defending East champion Pittsburgh Penguins, both broke the record for the most votes and claimed two forward positions. They will be joined up front by Montreal's Alex Kovalev. Washington's Alex Ovechkin, the league's reigning MVP and second this season in goals and points entering Saturday, finished only sixth among Eastern Conference forwards in the voting which mystified his coach. "It's dumb," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said, adding: "It's not right the best player in the game is not a starter." Jaromir Jagr, a former Penguins star, had held the record for votes, but his mark was broken by 11 players including all six East starters in this year's fan balloting conducted online and via text messaging. Crosby, elected as a starter for the third time, garnered 1,713,021 votes shattering Jagr's 2000 total of 1,020,736. Another pair of teammates dominated the voting for the Western Conference as 20-year-olds Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of the upstart Blackhawks were the two leading vote-getters.
