Loss of Johnson opens hole in offense
103 days ago - stltoday.com
Erik Johnson was among the best point-producers last season for the Blues, a team that struggled for offense. Now, the club must go on without the second-year defenseman, following Tuesday's confirmation that he will be out for the season. "That's a huge blow for us," Blues forward Lee Stempniak said. "The second half of last year, he was really coming into his own. You could tell he was a lot more confident with the puck, making easy plays but also jumping in (the rush). He was going to be a really big asset for our power play, let alone five-on-five and the penalty kill. He tore two knee ligaments in his right knee and will undergo season-ending knee surgery within the next month.

Johnson injury could put Blues in Schneider mix
104 days ago - ducks.freedomblogging.com
Extremely unfortunate news received late Tuesday afternoon by the St. Louis Blues could lead to a resolution of the Mathieu Schneider conundrum facing the Ducks . The Blues learned they will be without top young defenseman Erik Johnson, most likely for the season, because of torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee suffered during a golf-cart accident last week. Louis might look at the veteran Schneider as a replacement for Johnson. More than $3 million above the NHLs $56.7 million salary cap, the Ducks are trying to trade Schneider as a means of getting beneath the cap and creating room to sign unrestricted free-agent right wing Teemu Selanne . Schneider will make $5.75 million this season, but his salary-cap hit is $5.625 million, which is the average of his salaries this season and last ($5.5 million). To this point, the only options available to the Ducks in potential Schneider trades have included taking a contracted player back who also has a very significant salary.

KANSAS CITY Blues defenseman Erik Johnson will be in Cleveland today seeking a second opinion on his injured right knee. After the results are in, the club is expected to announce the long-awaited diagnosis and the estimated length of Johnson's absence. Johnson was injured one week ago today in a golfing accident while at the Lake of the Ozarks on a team bonding trip. Since then, Blues President John Davidson has acknowledged having an idea about the extent of Johnson's injury, but he maintained the club's stance that it wouldn't comment until today. "When it all gets said and done, they'll be giving us what their opinion is," Davidson said before Monday's 2-1 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Kings. A sprained ligament could keep Johnson out a few weeks, but a tear of either major knee ligament could sideline him for months. The Blues have been extra coy with Johnson, who has not been heard from since last week.
