1.    Morning take: Browns' search stalls

Posted by ESPN.com's James Walker Here are the most interesting stories Tuesday in the AFC North: Morning take: After a fast start last week, this dual search has come to a grinding halt. After a one-week hiatus, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returned to practice this week and expects to play in Sunday's playoff game against the San Diego Chargers. Morning take: This is good news that "Big Ben" will get at least one full week of reps before his playoff game, because rust from lack of practice time was an issue earlier in the season. Statistically, San Diego's 25 th -ranked defense should be a good matchup for him. The Cincinnati Bengals' coaching staff will participate at this year's Senior Bowl for the second time in five years. They can get an inside look at top college prospects, which can often influence draft plans. Without the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, is the playoff road easier this year for the Baltimore Ravens.

5.    Rich's Rant: Repeating the Same Mistakes

div id="header" class="pub"> Rich Passan believes that the Browns GM/Coach search shows they have failed to learn their lessons. That would appear to be the case with Randy Lerner. Four years ago, the Browns owner selected his new head coach before deciding on his new general manager. Its time for Lerner to hire a general manager, let him conduct the preliminary coaching interviews, narrow the field to two or three men, then call in the owner to help with the selection. So why has he interviewed Eric Mangini. That has to be at least one reason Scott Pioli , generally favored to become the Browns new president of everything football, is hesitant to accept Lerners invitation to climb on board Team Dysfunction and straighten it out. Now comes late word that if Pioli turns down Lerner, the owner might be interested in a package of Mangini and George Kokinis, Ozzie Newsomes right-hand man with the Baltimore Ravens and a good friend of Mangini.

In This Section Most Read Stories If Eric Mangini does have an inside track on the Browns' coaching job, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN and Jay Glazer of Fox Sports continued to report Sunday, the path has been cleared for the Browns to interview Mangini's first choice for general manager. A league source said the Browns asked for and received permission to talk to George Kokinis, the Baltimore Ravens' director of pro personnel for the past six seasons. But nothing has been scheduled, the source said, as owner Randy Lerner continues to explore all options. Kokinis began his NFL scouting career with the Browns in 1991 after serving as an intern in the operations department. Mangini came to the Browns in 1994 as a ball boy and public relations intern and moved up to coaches' assistant under Bill Belichick in 1995. Mangini, 37, was the first person interviewed Tuesday after Lerner fired coach Romeo Crennel and General Manager Phil Savage, and Lerner is said to be fascinated with Mangini. Reportedly during his interview, Mangini identified Kokinis as someone he would be comfortable working with.

17.    Browns can Crennel

Berea, OH (Sports Network) - Just one day after finishing a 4-12 season, the Cleveland Browns have fired head coach Romeo Crennel. The Browns, who dismissed general manager Phil Savage just hours after Cleveland's 31-0 season-ending loss at Pittsburgh, have now gotten rid of Crennel after four seasons. Crennel, who signed a contract extension through the 2011 season after a 10-6 campaign in 2007, finished his four-year tenure with a 24-40 record. The team entered the 2008 campaign with big expectations, but started off the season with three straight losses and finished with a six-game losing streak while failing to score an offensive touchdown in the final 24 quarters of 2008. The search for a replacement began with former Browns linebacker and assistant coach Bill Cowher, who framed his legacy as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach for 15 seasons, including six AFC championship games, eight division titles, 10 postseason berths and a Super Bowl XL title. The top name got crossed off even before Crennel's firing was official. Browns owner Randy Lerner said Monday, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, that he met with Cowher on Saturday night in New York.
