The York family can't help but be smitten with Mike Singletary's work in relief of Mike Nolan, and determined to lock him in as full-time head coach as soon as possible. But what happens 500 miles to the south, where San Diego meets Denver for a playoff spot, could set up the second most important decision. If the Chargers lose, finishing an uninspired 7-9, Norv Turner should be fired as head coach, giving the 49ers a chance to bring him back as their offensive coordinator. That Mike Martz will depart after one season in the job, based on a report in the Sacramento Bee that also said the Niners will offer Mike Singletary a multi-year contract on Sunday, makes sense. Singletary has always been respectful of Martz publicly, but the two have very different sensibilities about building an offense. He has earned the right not only to the full-time job, but to have a staff ideally suited to his vision.

Fisher is the dream scenario for a guy like Singletary to be handed a team in the middle of a season, and hold onto it well beyond a decade. Fisher never let go, and 14 seasons later, hes riding the leagues longest current head coaching tenure and poised for a Super Bowl run. The 27-year coaching veteran and current Falcons assistant was given the sash of interim coach twice in his career first with the Redskins in 2000, and then against with Browns in 2004. At various points this season, at least 16 different coaches rotated on and off the hot seat (not including the growing discussion of whether Indianapolis Tony Dungy will walk away after the playoffs).
