1.    Keown: Hail Norv!

WHERE WE'RE HAPPY TO REPORT OUR CAT, CANSECO, IS ALIVE AND WELL Tuesday, January 6, 2009 Behold an amazing human transformation. Norv is standing tall, for now, after the Chargers' five-game win streak. He was as good as fired if his San Diego Chargers didn't make the playoffs. Oh, how helpless he looked as his team stumbled through misfortune and poor execution. He would be fired, but at least the 49ers would have him back to call their plays, wouldn't they. He can call plays, they all said, but he's not a leader. And then, somehow, Norv got smart again.

5.    Turner: L.T. not worse but not better, either

Turner: L.T. not worse but not better, either By BERNIE WILSON, AP Sports Writer 1 hour, 45 minutes ago They anticipate a cold, hard-hitting divisional-round game Sunday at Pittsburgh. Thatll be a factor in how you play the game, and when you get in those games, obviously running the ball and playing defense are critical, coach Norv Turner said Sunday. Not only was it the first 11-10 score in NFL history, but it was the first of three straight losses that appeared to all but doom the Chargers. We did a great job defensively back there, said Turner, whose team got into the playoffs after winning the AFC West at 8-8. Weve got him packed in ice back in the training room right now, Turner said jokingly. Tomlinson, meanwhile, didnt play after scoring on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.

9.    Turner touts reverse psychology

Turner touts reverse psychology Originally published 06:47 p.m., December 31, 2008, updated 06:48 p.m., December 31, 2008 It's one of those fun plays, a gadget that gets crowds to their feet, gives offenses some razzle-dazzle and gives defenses something else to worry about. When it goes well, it's Norv Turner's kind of play. the Chargers coach said. Last Sunday, the Chargers so enjoyed the sight of Vincent Jackson taking the ball around the corner for 17 yards against the Denver Broncos, they later called for a second reverse and got 13 more yards from the wide receiver. In both cases, the blocker directly ahead of Jackson was Philip Rivers, though that wasn't why the NFL's top-rated quarterback Wednesday was named the league's Offensive Player of the Month for December. All (last) week we're doing that play (in practice),. LaDainian Tomlinson said, smiling.

13.    Singletary on board, so go get Turner

(12-25) 20:57 PST -- The most important decision of the 49ers' future should have been made already. The York family can't help but be smitten with Mike Singletary's work in relief of Mike Nolan, and determined to lock him in as full-time head coach as soon as possible. But what happens 500 miles to the south, where San Diego meets Denver for a playoff spot, could set up the second most important decision. If the Chargers lose, finishing an uninspired 7-9, Norv Turner should be fired as head coach, giving the 49ers a chance to bring him back as their offensive coordinator. That Mike Martz will depart after one season in the job, based on a report in the Sacramento Bee that also said the Niners will offer Mike Singletary a multi-year contract on Sunday, makes sense. Singletary has always been respectful of Martz publicly, but the two have very different sensibilities about building an offense. He has earned the right not only to the full-time job, but to have a staff ideally suited to his vision.

17.    Coaching hot seat: Haslett done, Turner back?

Coaching hot seat: Haslett done, Turner back. In the best moments, 49ers fans can look at Mike Singletary and see Jeff Fisher. Fisher is the dream scenario for a guy like Singletary to be handed a team in the middle of a season, and hold onto it well beyond a decade. Fisher never let go, and 14 seasons later, hes riding the leagues longest current head coaching tenure and poised for a Super Bowl run. The 27-year coaching veteran and current Falcons assistant was given the sash of interim coach twice in his career first with the Redskins in 2000, and then against with Browns in 2004. At various points this season, at least 16 different coaches rotated on and off the hot seat (not including the growing discussion of whether Indianapolis Tony Dungy will walk away after the playoffs). And while he clearly changed his mind down the stretch, Seattle management and owner Paul Allen closed the door before he was all the way out.
