1.    Nuggets' Smith due for court date

table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="100%"> FREEHOLD, N.J. Smith is due to appear in a New Jersey municipal court next week to face traffic summonses stemming from a car crash that killed a friend in June 2007. According to the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger, more than a year after the deadly collision in Millstone, the Monmouth County prosecutor's office presented the case to a grand jury, which decided on Oct. Police say Smith drove his SUV around a stopped car at a stop sign and into the path of an oncoming car in 2007. At the time of the accident, he had amassed 27 points and five suspensions on his license in less than a year. Since the accident, he has had two speeding tickets in Colorado, and his license has been suspended on three occasions. Israeli basketball team flees to locker room as Turkish fans protest strikes on Gaza ANKARA, Turkey - An Israeli basketball team fled to the locker room Tuesday as hundreds of fist-pumping, chanting Turkish fans protested the violence in Gaza. The fans chanted "God is Great" and "Killer Israel." At least one fan threw his shoe at Israeli players but police used riot shields to protect them as they left the court. The Turkish players also headed to the locker room. A pro-Islamic group earlier set an Israeli flag on fire outside the arena. Turkey has harshly criticized its ally Israel over the ground offensive in Gaza and has urged an immediate cease-fire. It has also called on the United Nations to take steps to end the violence. Israel says it acted to stop rocket attacks from Islamic Hamas militants.

13.    Lakers keep eyes open

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and coach Phil Jackson remain quiet on what, if anything, the team plans to do about fortifying the backcourt situation that was weakened when guard Jordan Farmar went down with a knee injury. Farmar routinely wanders onto the court, after the Lakers practices, but in all likelihood he wont be ready to play again until after next months All-Star break. But sources close to the team told me that the Lakers are keeping a close watch on the status of former Lakers guard Chucky Atkins , who is with the Denver Nuggets. Atkins has played in 14 of Denvers 36 games and is averaging 1.9 points and 2.0 assists. Denver has been dumping players and purging their roster since last summer to avoid a hefty luxury tax hit. They have made more deals than a harried swap-meet merchant. Sources also tell me that the Lakers are keeping an eye on another former Laker guard, Jannero Pargo , who currently is playing for the Russian professional leagues Dynamo Moscow team.

17.    Frye out of Blazers mix

19 trading deadline approaching, no doubt rumors will be swirling about a possible relocation for Frye, who recently told Portland reporters that he has not requested a trade. Frye has averaged 4.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 30 games but recently has found himself out of the regular rotation. Frye did play 10 minutes two nights ago, against the Lakers, but co ntributed only a pair of rebounds and an assist. Frye played three minutes of the fourth quarter and the only tally beside his name in the stat sheet for that period was a turnover. Nonetheless, Dunleavy remembers Frye was a rookie with the New York Knicks, back in 2005-2006. The one play that sticks in Dunleavys mind was a game between the Clippers and the Knicks on Feb. Yet, on a Knicks offensive possession, Frye plowed Clippers forward Chris Wilcox out of his prime defensive rebounding position to grab an offensive board and throw down a monstrous two-handed dunk.
