If, like some of us, you took on a serious task with the New Year like becoming a kinder, gentler sportswriter or quitting smoking youve probably already broken rank and returned to sober mortality. For anyone whose made and already broken a resolution, heres a chance to get back on the plus side. For one day today resolve only to write something positive about the Seattle Mariners. 5.    Balentien may solve Ms power shortage

There was plenty of movement in baseball's free-agent market Monday, though none in Seattle's direction. Though some power hitters remain available -- Adam Dunn, if the Mariners want to break the bank, or Ken Griffey Jr., if they want to go back to their roots -- it seems equally likely the team won't add a big stick in terms of a left fielder, first baseman or DH. That means the Mariners could be taking an extra-long look at second-year outfielder Wladimir Balentien as one of the answers to the puzzle in left field and the club's power needs. So Balentien, who hails from Curacao, will get a good long look at spring training in Peoria, Ariz. Like most players, Balentien is intrigued with the idea of representing his country in baseball's elite international competition. But if he does, it will take him away from the Mariners at a time when he could be making his case to be the left fielder. If he doesn't get the at-bats, we might not get the chance to see him enough." But Wakamatsu said he would not push Balentien, or any of the half-dozen Mariners players likely to get WBC invitations, to skip the event.

9.    Community Projection: Jeff Clement

Navigation: Jump to content areas: Secondary Sidebar: Links to Recent Stories, FanPosts and FanShots If You Think Adrian Beltre Is Bad And/Or Overrated, I Hate You And Find You Stupid The twelfth in a non-alphabetical and irregularly updated series of review pieces for each(?) of the players we predicted last spring. LL/USSM Community: .274/.346/.465 Actual Line: .227/.295/.360 Disastrous seasons aren't supposed to coincide with a 1.131 OPS in AAA, but I think it's fair to say that a disastrous season is exactly what Jeff Clement had in 2008. After turning the corner and coming on strong in Tacoma in 2007, Clement kicked off 2008 hotter than vintage Eliza Dushku in a hockey jersey, collecting twice as many walks as strikeouts through the first month and batting nearly .400 on his way to a late April promotion. Having made the move while still hovering around .500, the Mariners intended to use Clement's scorching bat to ignite a slumping offense in need of new blood. Whether or not the demotion was justifiable is an open question - at the time, Jose Vidro was just as big a pile of crap - but that's a separate matter, and the bottom line is that, when given his first trial, Jeff Clement didn't take advantage. Once again he demonstrated that he had nothing left to learn at the plate in the minors, so once again he got promoted to the big leagues, this time in an effort to introduce more youth to a ballclub going nowhere. Jeff Clement is not a good defensive catcher.

13.    Derek Lowe Insulted He's Only Being Offered Carlos Silva Money

The Mets' pursuit of Derek Lowe has recently hit a snag, and -- according to this source -- that would be the fact that he's a much better pitcher than Carlos Silva . You see, Silva signed a four year-$48 million contract with the Mariners before last season. Apparently Lowe finds his "distasteful" because he feels he is "far superior" to Silva. You can't really blame him, on the surface. It just doesn't seem too realistic, especially since the baseball economy isn't as strong this year as it was last (unless you are from the Bronx). 17.    Unsightly 2008 creates upheaval, hope for new year

Today's Weather Light Rain Current: 37F / Feels like: 32F High: 43F / Low: 38F Tomorrow's Weather Rain Showers High: 40F / Low: 36F Its 2009 a new year, a new day, a new start. But to reinforce, recall that one year ago today, the Seahawks had finished 10-6 and were preparing for their fifth consecutive trip to the playoffs under coach Mike Holmgren, who had fashioned a solid division dynasty. Mariners GM Bill Bavasi was closing in on a deal to bring in Orioles pitcher Erik Bedard to help manager John McLaren improve on the teams second-place finish (88-74) of 2007. The Sonics (coached by P.J. In case youve been afraid to add up the unhappy results since then, each of those teams declined to the point where they combined for 79 wins in 243 contests in calendar year 2008, a winning percentage of .325. So we enter the year with three new head coaches, two new honchos (GM/AD) and a new professional team . New Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, although 57 and a longtime baseball guy, has no prior experience as a GM.
