1.    TEIXEIRA SAYS SIGNING SABATHIA AND BURNETT 'WAS HUGE'

TEIXEIRA SAYS SIGNING SABATHIA AND BURNETT 'WAS HUGE' OTHER ADDITIONS WAS ONE REASON HE JOINED YANKEES Last updated: 2:21 pmJanuary 6, 2009 Posted: 2:01 pmJanuary 6, 2009 Mark Teixeira sure picked the right place. Teixeira said that one of the reasons he signed with the Yankees was because of their willingness to spend money, including the additions of starting pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Those are two guys I hated facing as a hitter. I know for 162 games we are going to be putting pitchers out there that most lineups aren't going to want to face. And a lineup that most pitchers don't want to see. "I know you guys are going to expect a lot of me and the fans of New York expect a lot out of me," Teixeira said. "At the same time, I expect more out of myself.

5.    Why the Angels can't get Manny Ramirez

Still reading internet blurbs linking the Angels to renewed Manny Ramirez interest. My guess is the prevailing theory behind this story reads something like this: Angels owner Arte Moreno will get over being spurned by Mark Teixeira and simply replace him in the lineup, protecting Vladimir Guerrero with another big-ticket Scott Boras client in Ramirez. Angels general manager Tony Reagins put it this way: Manny will not be an Angel. Sure, Ramirez would fit in the Angels lineup nicely. But he would have to be the DH, and he wants a multiyear contract. Plus a Ramirez signing would impact the Angels ability to pay Guerrero, to say nothing about a pending new deal for staff ace John Lackey. Thats unique.

9.    Teixeira won't get Yankees' 23

The Yankees will introduce Mark Teixeira today at a news conference at the old Yankee Stadium. Teixeira grew up as a Yankees fan, but now that he actually is a Yankee, he won't be able to wear his desired uniform number. He wore 23 with the Rangers as a tribute to former Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly , his favorite player. He switched to 24 when the Rangers traded him to the Braves in 2007 and wore 25 after the Braves dealt him to the Angels in 2008. Given that the Yankees have retired 23 in Mattingly's honor, the number 25 seems a likely option for Teixeira with the Yankees; Jason Giambi , who wore that number the past seven seasons, won't be returning because of the Teixeira signing. Re-signing Andy Pettitte still is a possibility, and that could happen as soon as later this week or early next week. The Yankees have offered the lefthander a pay cut from $16 million to $10 million; Pettitte wants the same $16-million paycheck he received in 2007 and '08.

Scioscia, Angels agree in principle ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Manager Mike Scioscia and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed in principle on a multiyear contract extension. Scioscia's current deal runs through 2009, with a club option for 2010, for about $2 million per season. General manager Tony Reagins said Monday the extension "goes well beyond" 2010. "This shows the commitment the organization has not only to Mike, but to being at the top of our game." The Angels are 803-655 in nine seasons under Scioscia, who turned 50 in November. The Angels were baseball's only 100-game winners in 2008, then were eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in the division series for the second consecutive year. The college hoops season is heating up.

17.    Angels lock in Mike Scioscia through at least 2014

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia takes in batting practice last September. The manager agrees in principle to contract extension. Terms are not disclosed, but deal ensures the longest-tenured manager in the American League will continue with team 'for a long, long time.' The Angels, ensuring the term "lame-duck" was never used in conjunction with their manager, announced today that Mike Scioscia has agreed in principle to a contract extension that will take him through at least the 2014 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but General Manager Tony Reagins said that Scioscia, already the longest-tenured manager in the American League, "will be around for a long, long time." Scioscia's current deal, which is believed to pay him about $1.75 million annually, ran through 2009 and included a club option for 2010. The 50-year-old former Dodgers catcher signed that contract more than a year before his previous deal expired. You look around the game, and there are not many ahead of him. We like stability, knowing that Mike is going to be here for a long time." Scioscia, the longest-tenured and most successful manager in Angels history, has guided the team to an 803-655 record (a .551 winning percentage) since 2000 and led the Angels to their only World Series championship in 2002.
