1.    TEIXEIRA SAYS SIGNING SABATHIA AND BURNETT 'WAS HUGE'

TEIXEIRA SAYS SIGNING SABATHIA AND BURNETT 'WAS HUGE' OTHER ADDITIONS WAS ONE REASON HE JOINED YANKEES Last updated: 2:21 pmJanuary 6, 2009 Posted: 2:01 pmJanuary 6, 2009 Mark Teixeira sure picked the right place. Teixeira said that one of the reasons he signed with the Yankees was because of their willingness to spend money, including the additions of starting pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Those are two guys I hated facing as a hitter. I know for 162 games we are going to be putting pitchers out there that most lineups aren't going to want to face. And a lineup that most pitchers don't want to see. "I know you guys are going to expect a lot of me and the fans of New York expect a lot out of me," Teixeira said. "At the same time, I expect more out of myself.

5.    Teixeira won't get Yankees' 23

The Yankees will introduce Mark Teixeira today at a news conference at the old Yankee Stadium. Teixeira grew up as a Yankees fan, but now that he actually is a Yankee, he won't be able to wear his desired uniform number. He wore 23 with the Rangers as a tribute to former Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly , his favorite player. He switched to 24 when the Rangers traded him to the Braves in 2007 and wore 25 after the Braves dealt him to the Angels in 2008. Given that the Yankees have retired 23 in Mattingly's honor, the number 25 seems a likely option for Teixeira with the Yankees; Jason Giambi , who wore that number the past seven seasons, won't be returning because of the Teixeira signing. Re-signing Andy Pettitte still is a possibility, and that could happen as soon as later this week or early next week. The Yankees have offered the lefthander a pay cut from $16 million to $10 million; Pettitte wants the same $16-million paycheck he received in 2007 and '08.

9.    Boston may have lead on Teixeira

--> BOSTON . One of the general managers involved in the Mark Teixeira negotiations was asked last night, Are you still in it. He answered, I honestly dont know. Two GMs who were involved in the Teixeira talks both felt the Red Sox had a leg up. They have the highest offer on the table, said one of the GMs. One of the GMs responded to Red Sox owner John Henrys comment to the Boston Herald that the Sox would not go 10 years on any player by saying, No ones going there (10 years). The Yankees were willing to go two more years than anyone else on CC Sabathia, so why not on Teixeira.

A Red Sox runner crossing home plate like Jason Bay (above), scoring the winning run in the deciding game of the American League Division Series against the Angels last October has been a familiar sight recently. That should continue in 2009, even though the Sox missed out on Mark Teixeira. Theres a reason the Red Sox wanted Mark Teixeira so badly: adding his plate discipline, power and consistency to their lineup would have smoothed out many of the lineups flaws and made it into a truly fearsome unit. But the pain of missing out on Teixeira may have many forgetting just how good an offense the team had in 2008. Boston will return almost the exact same unit, and projections by one of the teams consultants show that Boston should again field a lineup potent enough to rank in the leagues top five in 2009. The 2008 Red Sox scored 845 runs, third most in the majors, behind only the Texas Rangers and the Chicago Cubs. One of the very best is Bill James, the statistical analysis pioneer who the Red Sox now employ as a consultant.

By JESSE SPECTOR DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Red Sox Nation is fired up about the stunning announcement that top free-agent prize Mark Teixeira is Bronx bound. It won't be a very merry Christmas for Red Sox Nation , which a week a go seemed to be on the verge of celebrating Mark Teixeira 's arrival in Boston, but now must deal with the slugging first baseman in pinstripes for the next eight years. The Red Sox wanted him and they wanted him badly," Massarotti wrote. He took issue with the stance of Red Sox ownership losing its high-stakes poker game with Scott Boras over "$1 million-$2 million a year, roughly 1 percent of their 2008 payroll." "It simply makes no sense to stop bidding based on principle," he wrote, "particularly after dropping $51.11 million for the rights to Daisuke Matsuzaka and another $70 million for J.D. Drew ." Massarotti's Globe colleague, Nick Cafardo , wrote that "(the Angels and Nationals ) were losers in this one, but not more so than the Sox, who got the old double whammy - losing the player they wanted to the Yankees ." Cafardo talked to a general manager who "suggested . The Globe-produced fan site Boston Dirt Dogs took its usual stance - after fawning over Teixeira a week ago, their "Yankee Flipper" story featured several snappy one-liners, including " Bronx Bumblers Overpay for Overrated First Baseman, DH-Type." This from a site that a week ago asked, "Is There a Portuguese Prince on the Horizon in Boston?" and reminded the loyal legions "It's Pronounced Tei-SHAIR-ah . But Boston Will End Up Calling Him Tex." They'll probably be calling him something else now.
