1.    ZiPS Projections for Gordon, Teahen

Navigation: Jump to content areas: Secondary Sidebar: Links to Recent Stories, FanPosts and FanShots 2009 ZiPS Projections for Alex Gordon and Mark Teahen Devil_Fingers actually asked for these last month, but I didn't see (and my little Google-whoring script isn't set up to pick up Symborski). Im not entirely sure how SB Nation's interface will treat preformatted text, so this could very well end up in an disastrous misch-masch of HTML and Math-a-Bits Cereal. What are your thoughts on the other projection systems. Looking at James projections, its not uncommon for for positions to have between 2/3 and 3/4 of starters to hit better than the previous years average for a starter (same goes with pitching projections). ZiPS, PECOTA, and Chone are all well-constructed and theres really not a lot of difference between them. So BP does percentiles, Chone projects defense, and Im moving more and more towards presenting projections as a set of probabilities and provide projections in a format for Diamond Mind players to play with. Smith, Silver and I are all familiar with the same sabermetric research of the last 25 years right up until today and basing our systems on the same data from baseball history.

Marshall could be part of Teahen talks Fontenot also reportedly a possible target for Kansas City Kansas City "is focused" on Cubs left-hander Sean Marshall and infielder Mike Fontenot while discussing a possible trade for outfielder Mark Teahen, according to the Chicago Tribune. At 26, Marshall compiled a 3.86 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings in 2008, splitting time as a starter and a reliever. The left-handed Fontenot hit .306 last season as a reserve, including .360 after the All-Star break. By re-signing Ryan Dempster, the club is set with four-fifths of its rotation, leaving Jason Marquis and Marshall to battle it out for the fifth spot. Late last week, MLB.com learned from a source that no deal involving Teahen had been discussed by Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore and his Cubs counterpart, Jim Hendry. Teahen, eligible for salary arbitration, is expected to earn $3.1 million to $3.25 million this year. He has played left field, right field, third base and first base, so his versatility is valued.

Royals' GM mum on Teahen rumors Cubs' interest in lefty hitter neither confirmed nor denied by Moore KANSAS CITY -- Is Mark Teahen in the Chicago Cubs' sights. That was the speculation on Tuesday after the Cubs took care of a high priority, re-signing right-handed starter Ryan Dempster with a four-year, $52 million deal. Now the Cubs are turning their attention to a left-handed bat, which could include Teahen or David DeJesus. As is his custom, Royals general manager Dayton Moore would not comment on the Teahen report. "It would be reckless and inappropriate for me to comment on any potential trade or potential free-agent acquisition," Moore said. "I don't know if it's just left-over stuff from last year when there was a rumor that there was some interest from the Cubs for Matt Murton or some other hitter." MLB.com learned from a source that no deal involving Teahen or DeJesus had been discussed by Moore and his Cubs counterpart, Jim Hendry -- at least not to this point. Fontenot batted .305 with nine homers and 40 RBIs in 119 games, and Cedeno batted .269 with two homers and 28 RBIs in 99 games.

17.    Royals exploring deal to send Teahen to Indians for outfielder

PHILADELPHIA | The Royals are discussing a possible trade with the Cleveland Indians in which they would acquire an outfielder in exchange for Mark Teahen, according to sources with both teams.< Talks are believed to center on three possibilities for the Royals in the deal: Franklin Gutierrez, Ben Francisco and minor-leaguer Trevor Crowe.< The Royals previously tried to pry either Gutierrez or Francisco from the Indians when shopping reliever Octavio Dotel midway through the 2007 season.< All three trade targets are capable of playing center field, which would permit the Royals to shift David DeJesus, as they have long desired, on a full-time basis to left field.< No deal appears imminent, but general manager Dayton Moore has consistently cited the clubs need for improved offense as his top offseason priority. The Royals finished 12th among 14 American League teams last season in runs and on-base percentage. Only Minnesota hit fewer homers.< The Miami Herald also reported the Florida Marlins had serious talks last week with the Royals in their efforts to trade first baseman Mike Jacobs. The Marlins have also shopped Jacobs to Toronto and San Francisco.< Teahen, 27, has failed to become the consistent run-producer envisioned when acquired from Oakland in June 2004 as a central figure in a deal that sent outfielder Carlos Beltran to Houston.< It required a strong finish last season for Teahen to boost his average to .255 with 15 homers and 59 RBIs in 149 games. He spent most of the last two seasons in the outfield but would likely return to his natural position, third base, if obtained by the Indians.< The Indians are searching for a third baseman after souring on Andy Marte as a replacement for veteran Casey Blake, whom they traded in July to the Los Angeles Dodgers.< Cleveland also has a surplus of young outfielders. Sabathia to Milwaukee.< Gutierrez, 25, batted .248 last season with eight homers and 41 at-bats in 134 games. Neither Gutierrez nor Francisco is yet eligible for arbitration -- Francisco wont likely gain eligibility until after the 2010 season.
