CurrentIssue Check the date, men playing like it's March Raiders, benefiting from strong guard play from Brown and Gardner, win eight of nine The men's basketball team has battled a rocky start and various injuries to start the season, but you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at the results of their last nine games.Wright State has won eight of those nine contests following an 0-6 start and an injury to star guard Vaughn Duggins after the fourth game of the season and the team has been winning in convincing fashion. In their current six game winning streak, the Raiders have held their opponents to only 49 points per game, winning by an average margin of 13.2 points. They knocked off Horizon League preseason favorite Cleveland State by nine points.Their most recent game, however, against Youngstown State, annually one of the worst teams in the conference, was much closer than one would expect. The first half we were just outplayed."The Raiders exploded out of the locker room on a 9-0 run, and eventually tied the game with just over 10 minutes to play. Following a Youngstown State turnover, Todd Brown drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws with 33.7 seconds left for the final points of the game, a 60-59 Wright State win.No one has been more emblematic of the Raiders' slow start and subsequent turnaround than Brown. Without Duggins in the lineup, Gardner, who has battled several injuries of his own throughout his career, has averaged over 11 points per game, and is by far the team leader in assists with 56. It's a shootout here at Savage Arena, which normally would mean good news for the high scoring URI basketball team. The Rams came out flying, making their first five field-goal attempts, three of them 3-pointers by Jimmy Baron. URI poured in 37 points in the first 11:10 and led 37-25.
